MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — A northern New Jersey gun dealer won't be sponsoring a team in his town's youth baseball league this summer.
Not that he didn't try.
The South Orange-Maplewood Baseball Committee has turned down Matt Carmel's offer to put up $300 to sponsor a team using the name of his business, Constitution Arms.
Carmel says the denial is arbitrary and unfair. He says the league's overseers have permitted sellers of alcohol and tobacco as well as the local Cluck-U Chicken franchise to sponsor teams.
But the baseball committee's secretary, Craig Gruber, says committee members were certain there would be backlash in the suburban community if a Constitution Arms team took the field. The committee said no by an 8-1 vote.
